Let’s Celebrate with Ice Cream | Houston Cake Smash Photographer

When Mom and I first spoke about doing Camila’s 1st birthday photos, we knew we wanted to do something a little different than the traditional cake smash. As I thought about ideas, I asked her with much enthusiasm, “What about ice cream?!” Not knowing how this would work out, we decided to give it a shot because who doesn’t love ice cream!

First, since this wasn’t traditional, I really wanted to use my creativity and the simple elegance I love in my other types of sessions to be incorporated into this session. I blended my love of white space, pink florals and greenery into this cute custom set with all the elements bringing in those organic elements not only to the background, but also using it in the actual ice cream bowl with real fruit. I absolutely loved how this turned out once I started to put it together!

Full first birthday sessions usually consist of individual baby portraits, family portraits, and then finally the “cake smash” but of course in this case, the ice cream. Camila did so well considering when they first came in she had been running a low grade fever. Throughout the session she was so happy and played with Mom and Dad! When it was finally time to do the ice cream, we took the ice cream out of my fridge, and it had almost completely melted!! Melted to where it just wasn’t going to look like anything more than soup. Since we had already pushed our time some with Camila having to take a power nap, we decided to have her come back in a couple days and just do the ice cream smash part.

Prepared with ice cream in a freezer bag and having just bought it on the way, low and behold the ice cream still melted some. This Texas heat is just no joke! Unfortunately this time, Camila melted too. Even though we hoped the ice cream would help, she just wasn’t having a good day from teething.  Round number 2 unfortunately didn’t work.

I told Mom we could try it one more time if she really wanted (and I really wanted to make this work out too!) as we were determined. This time, the ice cream was extremely frozen and pretty hard. It took me little to even scoop it out and the ice cream kept well this time! We jumped, we giggled, we sang, we danced, we played peek a boo, and we tickled but nothing worked. Camila apparently really didn’t want to eat the ice cream and the resulting image is below. Photography is about the real moments right?? So at least we can’t say we didn’t try!
