Rebecca & Mikayla | Houston Motherhood Photographer

I have been friends with Rebecca, the talented photographer of R and J Studios, for a couple of years now, and met her little love during my Santa Mini sessions this past Christmas. When Rebecca booked a Petite Motherhood session with me, I was thrilled. Motherhood Sessions are my heart’s work. The bond between a mother and her baby is hard to put into words. It is a bond like no other and a love with no limits. The bond, however, is easily captured in images because you can actually feel the love and connection. As a mother myself, I know how special these images are to each of my Motherhood clients. To see the way we love our babies, and the way our babies love us, is a true gift. It is a love we feel every moment of every day but rarely get to see.

The year before Rebecca became a mother, she and her family suffered the loss of some amazing mother figures in their lives with the passing of her grandmother and great-grandmother. At the time, the last thing on Rebecca’s mind was becoming a mother herself. But life has a funny way of working out, and God had different plans for Rebecca and her family. Much to her surprise, Rebecca not only found out she was pregnant but found out she was 26 weeks along! As Rebecca describes it, “there were no fancy announcements because there wasn’t time for one. Phone calls in the doctor’s parking lot followed by more tears and laughter is how everyone found out.”

Overall, Rebecca had an easy, symptom-free pregnancy. Her labor and delivery was almost as unexpected as her pregnancy, as she was rushed in for an emergency c-section two days after her due date. Although Rebecca does not remember much from her delivery, the most beautiful of blessings emerged. Beautiful Mikayla has been a source of healing and happiness to Rebecca and their entire family. Mikayla is a spitting images of Rebecca as a child, and sometimes Rebecca feels as though she is looking back in time. I can only imagine what a joy it is for Rebecca’s mother to see so much of Rebecca in Mikayla.

Mikayla has captivated her mama with her giggles and ringlet curls. Her curiosity and sense of wonder at nearly 11 months old is a miracle to watch. At this age, and stage, the moments that Rebecca wants to hold on to are when Mikayla drops her head to her mama’s chest when she is tired, and snuggles right in. Those moments, and the giggles and the curls and the curiosity, are the moments that I strive to capture.

This Motherhood session had an extra layer of special to it because Rebecca brought her own mother to the session. Three generations of beautiful women, and two amazing mothers carrying on in the footsteps of Mikayla’s great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Rebecca has had an amazing influence of mothers in her life, and I know that her hopes and dreams for Mikayla will come naturally as Mikayla grows into an independent and kind woman. Mikayla already knows that she is so loved, and that love will fuel her to chase her dreams, whatever they may be. Dream big, Mikayla!
